November 2024 Ryan Babroff
What is your current position and who is your employer?
Self Employed, SoCalFirePhoto
When did you become a PPAGLA member?
I believe I have been a PPAGLA member since approximately 2016
How long have you been a photojournalist and how did you get started?
I primarily photograph wildfire incidents in the Western United States. I started as a freelance photographer back in 2008 and really found a passion for photographing wildland fire. I was very fortunate to stumble across some great photographers when I first started such as Mike Meadows and Gene Blevins along with Craig Durling and Ryan Ling. These folks really helped me with learning more about photo journalism entirely in the field.
Please share some career highlights:
I have had a number of photos and videos used in local and international news outlets throughout my career. During the Dixie Fire we captured the loss of the town of Greenville while it was happening. Seeing an entire town engulfed by fire was breathtaking and heart wrenching all at the same time. Our photos and videos went viral and were used across the world.
What advice do you have for students and those hoping to become photojournalists?
The best advice I can give to any new photojournalist is to work with other photographers and not try to compete but learn.
What is something you know now that you wish someone had told you when you were starting out?
Professionalism is the biggest trait that I have learned over the years and it goes a long way. It is an art form that in my opinion has been lost recently.
What is your favorite part of being a PPAGLA member?
Being able to connect and see others work and contributions.
