COMMENTS: A fun category with some great visuals, starting with a strong silhouette of a guitarist on the stage, to a colorful dragonfly dancer and finished with a group performing a water ballet.

3rd Place

COMMENTS: From a tight facial expression at a water ballet, to a simple composition in a tent at a jazz festival to a touching moment between a grandfather and his granddaughter at the edge of a swimming pool. Feature photos are defined by moments, graphics, light and humans all interacting together.

COMMENTS: A solemn foot procession of CHP officers carry slain officer Andre Move’s casket. A salute by a Marine veteran during the national anthem at a prep football game and an unconventional look at Bernie Sanders, with a perfect crop. All three winners here captured newsworthy moments with creativity and style.

Keith Birmingham / Pasadena Star News
3rd Place

COMMENTS: A strong and compelling black and white portrait from a Hong Kong protest rally leads this category. A nicely lit, and poignant portrait from an OC School Of The arts production about missing and murdered indigenous women and a portrait of a chef, reflected and lit perfectly.

COMMENTS: A nice mix of essays here with some nice moments with the marching band. The joys and trauma of the first day of school and a look inside the rodeo world.

3rd Place

COMMENTS: The catch at the goal line during a prep football game sounds easy, but always presents a challenge. This one was perfect. A “header” during the action in a Galaxy game sounds easy, looks easy…A bucking bronco during a rodeo sounds easy, looks easy. There is a trend in all three of these winning entries. To most people they look easy and should be easy to shoot. However, the real proof is in capturing the moment with timing, precise focus, great light and the correct lens!

3rd Place

COMMENTS: Great sports features are made of human moments during times of victory and defeat. The first place winner shows the reaction of the Idaho little league team that had just lost to a team from Oregon during the Northwest Regional Championships. Second place shows how top fuel drivers can celebrate with champagne and the third place winner depicts the spirit of prep football with a player breaking through a paper banner.

COMMENTS: First place was the best of the batch with the dramatic arrest of an armed suspect in Palm Springs. Classic news photo. Good expression on the face of a CHP officer for second place. No third place awarded.
